6 Secrets for a Beautiful White Smile

Have your pearly whites lost their lustre because of dingy grey or yellow stains? Many people complain of staining or discolouration of their teeth. Stained teeth can occur as we age, but some common foods, drinks, and even mouthwashes can stain teeth. Once your teeth start to yellow, it can become quite noticeable. It can affect your appearance and make you look older.

Our 6 tips for a healthy, beautiful whiter smile:

  • Practice good dental hygiene. Maintaining good dental hygiene is the basis to keeping your teeth healthy and white. Daily brushing and flossing will prevent the accumulation of stains, yellow plaque and tartar on your teeth.

  • Be mindful of what you choose to eat and drink. Tooth enamel is actually porous, meaning it absorbs much like a sponge does (well maybe not as much as a sponge, but you get the idea). Certain foods like red wine, coffee, tea and others tend to stain teeth. You will be more likely to maintain whiter teeth if you cut down on your consumption of these foods. Whitening toothpastes can help to reduce external staining, but be careful as these can be very abrasive and may cause irreversible damage to tooth enamel if used on a long term basis.

  • Avoid acidic foods and beverages. These drinks usually contain large amounts of sugar or acid. The acids in foods like orange juice, lemons, wine, soda and sports drinks will wear away your enamel. Once it's gone it won't grow back. The result is thin, translucent discoloured teeth. To prevent tooth erosion, make healthier choices. Rinse your mouth with water when you finish drinking and wait 30 minutes before brushing. This will give your enamel time to re-mineralise and re-harden.

  • To keep teeth white, don’t light up. Smoking is one of the worst offenders when it comes to staining teeth. Tobacco causes brown stains that penetrate the grooves and pits of tooth enamel. You should always avoid tobacco products [whether smoked or chewed] if you want to maintain a bright healthy smile.

  • Have your teeth cleaned on a regular basis. Visit your dentist at least twice a year for a professional cleaning and thorough exam. A professional cleaning helps you keep your teeth looking bright and white by preventing the build-up of yellow plaque and tartar. Your dentist can also restore your smile by repairing any decay and replacing old fillings that have deteriorated and discoloured with time. A healthy smile is always radiant.

  • Have your teeth professionally whitened. If however, you still find that your teeth are “yellow” and not their brightest, you can, under the supervision of your dentist, have recourse to a professional whitening treatment. Your dentist and hygienist will advise you and help find the whitening process that will fit you, your circumstance and your lifestyle in order to obtain the best possible results. Brighten and illuminate your smile!

Keeping your smile white and healthy will take years off your appearance. A bright smile is a sign of vitality and youth and always makes a statement.
