Sealants

An invisible barrier to protect your teeth from cavities!

Have you ever wished you could avoid fillings and cavities? Even with regular and proper brushing and flossing the risk of tooth decay for your children and you still exists, and cavities can still happen. The good news is that dental sealants can help prevent tooth decay.

What are they?

Dental sealants are clear or tooth-colored [white] liquid plastic coatings that are applied to the grooves and pits on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. They are a safe, painless and low-cost method to prevent tooth decay.

Why do I need it?

These grooves and pits are extremely difficult and often impossible to keep clean with regular brushing. That’s because toothbrush bristles can’t reach into the microscopic grooves to remove the plaque, bacteria and tiny food particles that become stuck and trapped there through regular eating and drinking.

How does it work?

First, we clean out of the plaque and bacteria and then we apply the dental sealants to these grooves and pits.

The sealant forms a smooth surface barrier that seals off these vulnerable areas so that food, plaque and bacteria can’t get trapped and can’t accumulate.  As a result, they protect the hard-to-clean pits and grooves of teeth -  the areas where most cavities form. With no place to hide on the smooth sealant, food, plaque and bacteria are simply brushed away during regular cleaning.

Aren’t dental sealants for kids?

It’s more common to use sealants for children because we want to protect the newly erupted teeth. The American Dental Association notes that pits and fissures develop early in life and so, children and teens are more likely to need sealants.

However, if you are an adult with a high risk of developing cavities, you can also benefit from sealants.

Will it prevent cavities?

Nothing will guarantee that cavities won’t happen, but every little bit helps.

Brushing and flossing are important.  But it’s also helpful to reduce the places where cavities can form – the grooves and pits where brushing and flossing can’t get clean. By applying sealants to those areas, it’s a safe bet that you will see fewer cavities.

What are the benefits of dental sealants?

  • They prevent decay in hard to reach vulnerable grooves and pits of back teeth
  • They are practically invisible when you eat, speak, laugh or smile.
  • Safe and painless.
  • Low-cost – a fraction of the cost of a filling.

  • Can be done in one, easy visit – it’s simply “painted on” and hardened with a special light.
  • No needles or freezing required
  • It a great way to protect your child’s healthy new teeth, as well as a great way to protect  healthy adult teeth.
