What’s all this about?

Tooth enamel (the hard material that covers our teeth) is actually porous, meaning it absorbs much like a sponge does (well maybe not as much as a sponge, but you get the idea).

Tooth enamel absorbs from the foods we eat. Certain foods like wine, coffee and others tend to stain the teeth this way. Instead of being white or close to it, the teeth start to pick up a yellowish hue.

Your dentist can, to some extent, improve the appearance of your teeth by polishing them during your regular visit, but this is not often enough to remove the ‘internal’ stains that have accumulated.

In general, we always recommend you consult your dentist before starting any whitening regimen.  Depending your situation, there may be certain options which will be more effective and yield better results for you.

Is it expensive?

No.

Some in-clinic chair side treatments can be expensive – we actually don’t tend to recommend many of them as they tend to have undesirable side-effects.

But there are some whitening regimens that are only available from your dentist that you use at home under your dentist’s supervision that are very effective and affordable.
